This historic balconied theater, was first opened on December 8th, 1927.
The first film ever shown on it's screen was, " Smile, brother, Smile " starring Jack Mulhall and Dorothy Mackaill. Following that first evening of Hollywood glamor and vaudeville talent, The State Theater would go on to be the home of many happy memories and long remembered friends. From movies, to music, to Broadway caliber productions on it's stage, The State Theater was always a multi purpose entertainment facility, even when it's name was changed to the " Stoughton Cinema Pub. "
Only 6 days shy of it's 80th birthday, the cinema closed it's doors on an uncertain future. December 2nd, 2007 marked a sad day to many who called this theater home.
Three years later, the building was purchased with the intent of saving it, bringing it back to it's former glory to once again be called the home of all who entered it's doors. With the help of STARS Community Theater, a non-profit, theater organization, The State Theater goes into it's rebirth stages.
Now it's up to all those who have fond memories of this beautiful theater, and all those who want to make memories for the future to save this piece of history. Help us Save the State Theater!
